n110460828921_6073On Sunday 30th August we’ll be having a fundraising event in TJs, Newport. For a modest entry fee of £5, you can feast on a delight of rabble rousing rebel music.

Over on tour from Belgium are dub/ska-punk band The Usual Suspects who bring militant politics to music in a manner that can only be matched by Spanner who are coming over from Bristol. They are joined by Cardiff revolutionaries KilnAboy and Dirty Revolution who bring folk-punk and reggae-punk respectively.

There are event pages on both facebook and myspace, please help us promote this event by inviting your friends! On the night you’ll be able to find us activists taking turns behind  our usual stall, it would be good to meet anyone who is interested in finding out more or getting involved.

Sincere radical political music is a rare and splendid thing, we have been lucky to be able to call on the small but committed core of activist musicians, protest singers and anarcho bands to play the various benefit gigs we hold. The lyrical content expressed is often argument against the injustice of social control and the capitalist system, take for example “border regime” by Spanner:

“Thousands flee in desperation, their home’s a war-torn hell
Where children play at soldiers to the sound of booming shells
For one young woman who’s grown up fast surrounded by the guns
In the back of a truck to another land, she’s with the lucky ones
But at the end of her long journey, after so much pain
There’s no friendly faces waiting as she’s forcibly detained

Coz the system needs her in the right place, caught in the poverty trap
For the good of the nation, for the sake of lines on maps
And money moves so much further and faster in the 21st century
But the borders get more solid when you’re a refugee”

There are several other bands that have recorded songs that cover issues around migration from a libertarian perspective, we intend to put together a compilation CD in the near future which will include a number of tracks from local bands that play our benefit gigs, if you know of any other tunes in support of No Borders, please let us know.
